We left the Grand Canyon by 8:30 AM. We headed east on Hwy 64 to Cameron where we stopped for gas. We chose Speedy Gas Station. It was $2.45 a gallon, and it was not speedy. The pump was so slow. It even clicked off after $50.00. So I waited it out and put $100.00 in the tank. Then we headed south on Hwy 89 towards Flagstaff.
As we approached Flagstaff and Interstate 40, we could see a huge forest fire in the west of Flagstaff.
As we got on the Interstate and headed east, we passed through the smoke cloud. It was pretty bad. Glad we only had to travel in it for 10 minutes or so.
Our plan was to get to the Fire Rock Casino in Gallup, NM and boondock there for 2 nights, then complete our trip to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta after that.
We entered New Mexico,

and when we got to the casino in Gallup, after 274 miles, they didn't have any RV overnight parking. There wasn't even one RV in their parking lot. Rats! Move to plan B.
We topped off the gas tank in Gallup at a Shell station for $2.33 a gallon, and continued east.
Seventy five miles later we pulled into Sky Casino where we had stayed a couple of times before. They only charge $19.00 a night for FHU. But ... they were totally full up. Plan B is a no-go. Moving on ....
Plan C was to stop at the Route 66 Casino just 20 miles short of Albuquerque. We are tired at this point. It has become a 400 mile day. Only one other time in the last 4 years did we travel further in one day.
As we entered the parking lot, there were the dreaded signs no RV boondocker wants to see .... 'No Overnight Parking'.
It seems they recently opened a RV park in back of the casino and they not only wanted to eliminate the 'RV homeless' parkers, but wanted to make a little money also.Route 66 casino rv park albuquerque new mexico right now
